Nashville city schools and Memphis city Schools will get approximately 40% of the $250 M Race to the Top money being distributed to school districts. www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=118838&catid=2"In Nashville the money probably will be used to build on the district's efforts to train teachers, improve the performance of at-risk students, roll out information technology systems and reorganize the central office, said Olivia Brown, a school district spokeswoman.""On the other end of the spectrum, Williamson County expects to receive only about $331,000 over Race to the Top's four-year life span. That works out to about $11 per student, so little that district officials are not sure that the program will be worth the administrative costs associated with it, said Leslie Holman, the district's chief financial officer. "
I was under the impression that teachers were supposed to be trained before they went into the classroom. If I lived in Williamson County, I'd ask each parent to give $11, and refuse to participate. Why not allocate the money on a per student basis? Oh yea, I forgot - redistribution - Williamson County is one of the wealthiest counties in the state and probably pay more in income taxes to the federal government so it's only fair that they receive only a token amount? ??
