I would find it difficult serving in any branch of todays military. My way of thinking is obsolete. It used to be simple. You killed the enemy.

My son is thinking of not re-enlisting. He says that the Army has the attitude that they are your life and your family is not important. His wife is pregnant and has an appointment in the morning for an ultrasound. He is having trouble getting time off to go with her.

Army has always had the opion of if we wanted you to have a wife, we would of issued you one. This is why the Army has always had such a hard time retaining people.
A frined of mine in the Army told me once that the first hitch in the Army was always the hardest because of the high turn over of people, many in the Army have developed the mentality of everyone is a one hit wonder until they prove differently. If they leave then no harm done, if they stay they want it therefore we will treat them better.
A lot of this steems from the number of people who come in for one hitch for the training and benefits then bolt. I saw a lot of that in my years in the military (retired after 21 years of active duty). Afterwards your sitting there thinking "you know how much money and time we just spent to train this person, now their gone making 3 times the money and we have to train someone else".

The U.S. Army will always have something that most private sector organizations lack – over one million Soldiers willing to fight for our freedom, and sacrifice everything, even their lives, in order to keep our country safe. It’s what makes the U.S. Army, as an organization, unique, and what gives us our strength. Our Soldier’s Creed and values are at the core of every action taken by our men and women in uniform.

To be a member of the armed forces involves sacrifice, not just sacrifice by the soldiers but their families as well.
To be the wife, husband, mother, father, sister, brother or child of a soldier is to understand (or as in the case of a child) later learn the importance of what the soldiers is fighting for, and to know that the soldier protects the freedoms and American way of life out of love, not just for his family for also for his country.
My dad was in the military. I don't know that his service was ever easy on the family, but the family was always supportive and proud of what he stood for.
I salute the members of our military and their families for the sacrifices they make .
