What is it that lures millions of tourists to Kerala? It might be the serene beauty of the backwaters or the silver stretches of sand on the beaches or a healthy massage at kerala ayurvedic resorts that makes tourists across the continents to fall in love with this God's Own country. Another Kerala experience, that appears in many blogs by tourists who visited here, is nothing but the ride on an elephant. Elephants have been a part and parcel of Kerala's cultural events for years, and one cannot imagine a Thirssur pooram, one of the biggest festivals in Kerala, which attracts thousands, without the presence of caparisoned elephants. Now they are being used as a bait to lure the tourists to this country. There are many places that offer an elephant ride to the tourists. You can sit on this huge mammal and experience the swaying rhythm when the elephant walks with firm steps. There are also sanctuaries for elephants set up in various parts of Kerala, where they are protected and trained. (Kunnathoor Kotta, near Guruvayoor is one of such sanctuaries and it is the largest of its kind in the world). In these elephant camps, these animals have been properly fed and protected and tourists find it interesting to watch the daily routine of elephants here.
